Jim Grote started in business based on the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction, imagination and affirmation. He founded Donatos Pizza in 1963 on the south side of Columbus, Ohio as a 20-year-old. He went on to receive a patent for a machine to apply pepperoni to pizza and started the Grote Company in 1972, manufacturing food-processing equipment.
When he started in business, he was warned by local businessmen that to succeed required an intense, competitive mindset, including advice that it was necessary to go after your competitors before they get you. Business is a dog eat dog environment, he was told, and that you cannot make money and keep your principles - such as goodwill, treating others how you like to be treated and doing the right thing with integrity and honesty.
After 12 years of Catholic education, Grote began his search for a deeper understanding of the Golden rule, loving your neighbor as you love yourself. He learned about the Christian traditions of unconditional love, the eastern traditions of yoga philosophy, meditation and the concepts of Buddhism. Grote has dedicated his career to proving that you can make money and keep your principles.
